Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene — UHMWPE — has a reputation that sounds too good to be true: it wears better than steel, slides like it is greased, and shrugs off impacts that would shatter other plastics. It is not marketing. UHMWPE is genuinely exceptional at a few things, and that is why it has become the default liner and wear material in mining, bulk handling and food processing.
What makes it different
UHMWPE is polyethylene with extremely long molecular chains — hundreds of thousands of atoms long. Those giant chains entangle and transfer load in a way ordinary HDPE cannot, giving the material its remarkable toughness and abrasion resistance while keeping the low friction and chemical resistance of polyethylene.

Where UHMWPE is used
- Chute and hopper liners — coal, ore, grain and aggregate do not stick or wear through.
- Wear strips and guide rails — conveyor and packaging lines.
- Cutting boards — the food industry standard.
- Chain guides and sprockets — quiet, low-friction, no lubrication.
- Snow and marine parts — non-stick and weather-resistant.
Why it out-lasts steel
Steel wears by abrasion and can corrode; UHMWPE absorbs impacts that would dent metal and slides material away instead of grinding against it. In sliding-abrasion duties like chute liners, a UHMWPE liner can out-last steel by a wide margin — while weighing a fraction as much and needing no lubrication.
What to watch for
UHMWPE is soft, creeps under load and is hard to bond — and it cannot be injection-moulded, so it is shaped by compression moulding or machining. It is also not a high-temperature material. Design for support and use mechanical fastening where possible.
