High-density polyethylene — HDPE — is one of the most widely used plastics on earth. It is tough, resists most chemicals, handles weather without complaint and costs far less than the engineering plastics. If your part sees water, chemicals, UV or rough handling, HDPE is often the sensible answer.
What HDPE is
Polyethylene is the simplest polymer — a chain of carbon atoms with hydrogen. “High-density” means the chains are packed closely with few branches, which makes the material stiffer and stronger than low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The result is a plastic that behaves more like a durable engineering material than a flimsy film.

Why HDPE is so popular
- It does not absorb water, so it stays stable in wet service.
- It resists a wide range of chemicals, including many that attack metals.
- It is easy to weld, machine and fabricate into large parts.
- It is food-safe in the right grades and fully recyclable.
- It costs a fraction of PTFE, POM or nylon.

- Pipe and fittings — water, gas and chemical lines.
- Cutting boards and food surfaces — food-safe grades.
- Machined parts — guides, spacers, wear strips and rollers.
- Outdoor applications — play equipment, marine parts and signage.
Where it falls short
HDPE is soft and creeps under sustained load, and it is not a high-temperature material. It also cannot match POM or nylon for stiffness and precision. But for chemical resistance, toughness and cost, very little beats it.
