Bakelite — Phenolic Resin
A thermoset plastic with excellent heat resistance and electrical insulation, dimensionally stable under load.
Bakelite (phenolic resin) is a thermosetting plastic known for high heat resistance, excellent electrical insulation and dimensional stability under sustained load. Unlike thermoplastics, it does not soften on heating, so it holds its shape and strength at elevated temperatures.
It remains a standard material for electrical insulation, switchgear and precision jigs where heat and rigidity are critical.

Key Properties
| Density | 1.35 – 1.45 g/cm³ |
| Service temperature | Up to +150 °C continuous |
| Electrical insulation | Excellent — high dielectric strength |
| Water absorption | 0.3 – 1.0 % |
| Compressive strength | Very high |
| Dimensional stability | Excellent under load (low creep) |
| Heat resistance | Does not soften — thermoset |
| Machinability | Good — machined like hardwood |
Typical Applications
- Electrical insulators and spacers
- Switchgear and commutator components
- Jigs, fixtures and tooling
- Terminal boards and bushings
- Heat-resistant mechanical parts
- Precision instrument components
Available Forms & Sizes
| Form | Size range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sheet / Plate | 1 – 50 mm thick | Various grades & colours |
| Rod | 6 – 100 mm diameter | Round bar |
| Tube | Custom diameters | Made to order |
| Custom parts | To your drawing | CNC machined |
Grades & Modifications
Available in paper-, fabric- and glass-reinforced phenolic grades. Fabric grades offer higher impact strength, while glass grades give the best mechanical and electrical performance. Flame-retardant and high-temperature grades are also available.
Machining & Fabrication
Bakelite machines readily by turning, milling and drilling, though it is abrasive and requires sharp tooling and dust extraction. We produce precise electrical and mechanical parts with clean, dimensionally stable edges.
