PTFE in Industry: From Semiconductor Fabs to Chemical Plants

PTFE is one of those materials that hides in plain sight. You rarely see it, but it is doing critical work inside the industries that build modern life. This article looks at where PTFE is used today and why engineers keep coming back to it — with examples from real applications.

Semiconductors: the pursuit of purity

Chip manufacturing demands extreme cleanliness and chemical resistance, and PTFE delivers both. In wafer fabs it appears as:

  • Tubing and liners for ultra-pure chemical delivery — transporting aggressive media like hydrofluoric acid without leaching contaminants. Switching from less suitable polymers to PTFE has been reported to cut particle counts substantially.
  • Wafer handling components — soft, non-scratching and metal-free, so they do not damage wafers or introduce ions.
  • Wet-bench and etch components — nozzles, supports, seals and focus rings that survive fluorine-based plasmas and hot acids.
  • Seals and O-rings — maintaining vacuum integrity across wide temperature swings in lithography equipment.

In chemical plants, metal parts fail when they corrode. PTFE linings, gaskets, valve seats and pump components handle the acids, bases and solvents that attack everything else. Refineries, LNG plants and power stations rely on PTFE for sealing and insulation in hot, corrosive and high-vibration environments. Its wide temperature range and low friction keep valves moving and joints leak-free where other materials degrade.
