POM quietly powers a huge amount of modern machinery. Wherever a part has to move precisely, quietly and for a long time without lubrication, there is a good chance it is acetal. This article surveys the industries that depend on POM and the trends driving its growth.
Automotive: the biggest user
Automotive accounts for roughly a third of global POM demand, and for good reason. POM’s stiffness, stability and low friction make it ideal for:
- Fuel system components — pump parts, fuel caps and level sensors that resist hydrocarbons.
- Interior mechanisms — window regulators, seat belt parts and door latches that must work silently for years.
- Transmission and actuators — gears, bushings and sliding elements with low friction and wear.
- Under-hood and EV parts — sensor housings, clips and connectors that withstand heat and fluids.
Electrification is accelerating this. Battery-electric platforms use engineering thermoplastics far more heavily than combustion cars, and POM features in battery-management housings, e-motor cooling circuits, charging-port mechanisms and precision actuator gears. As global EV sales push past 20% of light vehicles and keep climbing, per-vehicle POM content is expected to rise steadily.
Industrial machinery and automation
Conveyors, pumps, packaging lines and robotics all run on POM gears, rollers, guides and bushings. These parts reduce noise, eliminate lubrication in many duties, and keep production lines running. With automation and smart-manufacturing investment rising, demand from this sector keeps growing.
Electronics and devices
As devices miniaturise, small precision gears and mechanisms become critical. POM’s dimensional stability, insulation and mouldability make it a natural fit for compact mechanisms, connectors and switchgear — and for the tiny gear trains inside consumer electronics and appliances.
Medical devices
Diagnostic and patient-care equipment relies on precise, repeatable motion. Medical-grade POM is used for gears and mechanisms in devices where tight tolerances and reliable operation are essential — with the cleaning and sterilisation requirements carefully matched to the grade.
Why POM keeps winning
- Metal-to-plastic conversion cuts weight and cost.
- Self-lubricating behaviour removes maintenance.
- Injection moulding delivers complex, precise shapes at volume.
- It machines beautifully for prototypes and one-offs.
What to watch
Not all POM is equal. Grade selection — homopolymer vs copolymer, wear-modified, glass-filled or food-contact — matters enormously. Recycled and bio-based grades are emerging, but their performance varies, so validate carefully for critical or safety-related parts.
