Bakelite has a claim few materials can match: it was the first synthetic plastic, created in 1907 by Leo Baekeland. More than a century later, phenolic resins — the family Bakelite belongs to — are still specified for demanding applications because of what they do best: stay rigid and insulate when things get hot and electrical.
What Bakelite is
Bakelite is a thermoset — a phenolic resin that reacts and cures permanently, rather than melting like a thermoplastic. That difference is the key: once set, it cannot be remelted, giving it excellent rigidity and heat resistance. It is usually reinforced with fillers such as wood flour, cotton or glass fibre to tailor its properties.

Why thermosets still matter
Thermoplastics soften when heated; thermosets do not. That makes Bakelite and similar phenolics ideal where a part must keep its shape and insulating properties under heat — conditions that would deform ordinary plastics. It also machines cleanly and holds tolerances well.
Where Bakelite is used
- Electrical components — insulators, switchgear, terminal boards and housings.
- Heat-resistant parts — handles, knobs and components near heat sources.
- Mechanical parts — wear pads, gears and bushings in light duty.
- Machined shapes — sheets, rods and tubes for precision work.
- Historically — radios, telephones and, famously, early electric plugs.
Working with Bakelite
Bakelite is strong and rigid, but brittle — it does not take impacts as well as nylon or POM, and it demands sharp tooling and good dust extraction when machined. Design for compression rather than bending, and it will serve for decades.
