Sustainability used to be a marketing line for plastics. It is now a regulatory and commercial reality. Recycled-content requirements and corporate carbon targets are filtering down to engineering components, so it is worth understanding where recycled and bio-based materials fit — and where they do not.
Why this is happening now
Packaging rules in Europe and Asia are mandating minimum recycled content, and extended producer responsibility schemes are adding cost to virgin material. Even where engineering plastics are not directly in scope, the pressure spills over: customers want lower-carbon parts and suppliers who can document them.
Where recycled material fits
- Non-critical parts — guides, spacers, covers and fixtures where colour and cosmetic finish are flexible.
- High-volume items — where cost saving and carbon reduction reinforce each other.
- Closed-loop projects — where consistent waste streams can be reprocessed into the same application.
Where virgin material still wins
For food contact, medical, chemical sealing and tight-tolerance precision parts, virgin grades remain the safe choice. Recycled streams vary batch to batch, which conflicts with strict dimensional and compliance requirements. For these duties, the more realistic sustainability gains come from longevity — using the right durable material so parts last longer and get replaced less often.
Long life is sustainability too
It is easy to overlook, but a wear part that lasts three times longer is a genuine sustainability win — less material consumed, fewer replacements, less downtime. Choosing UHMWPE over a commodity plastic for a liner, or the correct grade for an aggressive chemical, can have a bigger footprint benefit than a recycled-content claim.

Where a recycled or bio-based grade genuinely suits the application, we will say so; where it does not, we will not pretend otherwise.
